Expert Apostille Services in Boston, MA | Notary & Certificate Authentication | Get An Apostille Today!
When you need to use a Massachusetts document in another country, getting the document properly authenticated can be an important part of the process. Depending on the destination country and type of document, you may need an Apostille, certificate authentication, notarization, or additional legalization before the document can be accepted abroad.
At "Boston Notary Service" (https://reference-url-citation.invalid/0), we help individuals, families, businesses, attorneys, students, and organizations prepare documents for international use. Our services include Massachusetts Apostille services, document authentication, notary services, certificate retrieval, and assistance with international legalization requirements.
Whether you are in Boston, somewhere else in Massachusetts, another U.S. state, or even outside the United States, we can help you determine the appropriate process for your documents.
What Is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certificate used to authenticate certain public documents for use in another country that participates in the Hague Apostille Convention.
The Apostille Convention was created to simplify the traditional legalization process for public documents being used internationally. Instead of going through a longer chain of authentication and consular legalization, an eligible document can generally receive an Apostille from the appropriate competent authority in the jurisdiction where the document was issued.
An Apostille does not certify that the information contained in a document is true. Instead, it authenticates the signature, capacity of the signer, and, where applicable, the identity of the seal or stamp on the document.
Because requirements vary depending on the document and destination, it is important to confirm whether an Apostille is actually the correct authentication for your situation.
Massachusetts Apostille & Certificate Authentication Services
Massachusetts-issued documents may require authentication before they can be accepted internationally.
The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth is the state office responsible for authentication and certification of qualifying Massachusetts public documents. Massachusetts law also provides procedures for authenticating official records and documents.
We can assist with documents such as:
- Massachusetts birth certificates
- Massachusetts marriage certificates
- Massachusetts death certificates
- Divorce and court documents
- School and university documents
- Diplomas and transcripts
- Corporate and business documents
- Powers of attorney
- Affidavits and notarized documents
- Other eligible Massachusetts public or notarized documents
The correct procedure can depend on how the document was issued, whether it is an original or certified copy, whether it was notarized, and where it will ultimately be used.
Birth, Marriage & Death Certificate Apostille Services
Vital records are among the most common documents requiring authentication for international use.
If you need a Massachusetts birth certificate, marriage certificate, or death certificate for use in another country, you may need an official certified copy before it can be submitted for an Apostille or authentication.
If you do not have the required certified copy, we can also assist with document retrieval in appropriate circumstances.
This can be especially useful for people who no longer live in Massachusetts.
You Don't Have to Be in Massachusetts
One of the biggest advantages of using a professional document service is convenience.
You may be living in Florida, Texas, California, New York, another state—or even another country—and still need a Massachusetts document prepared for international use.
For eligible documents, we can help coordinate the retrieval, authentication or Apostille process, and return shipping so you do not have to travel back to Massachusetts simply to handle paperwork.
This is particularly helpful for former Massachusetts residents, U.S. citizens living abroad, international families, attorneys, businesses, and people completing immigration, marriage, employment, education, or residency requirements overseas.
Diploma, Transcript & University Document Apostille
Educational documents frequently need authentication when they are being submitted to a foreign university, employer, government agency, immigration authority, or professional organization.
Depending on the institution and document, a diploma, transcript, degree, enrollment document, or other educational record may require notarization, certification, or another form of authentication before an Apostille can be issued.
Because educational documents are not all handled the same way, we recommend reviewing the specific requirements before sending your original documents.
Apostille vs. Notarization: What's the Difference?
A notarization and an Apostille are not the same thing.
A notary public verifies a signature or performs another authorized notarial act. An Apostille is an authentication certificate issued by a competent government authority for eligible documents intended for use internationally.
In some situations, a document may need to be notarized before it can receive an Apostille. In other situations—particularly with certified government records—the document may go through a different authentication process.
That is why simply having a document notarized does not automatically make it ready for use in another country.
Apostille or Embassy Legalization?
The destination country determines which authentication route is appropriate.
If the country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and the Convention applies to your particular transaction, an Apostille may be used instead of traditional legalization.
If the destination country is not covered by the Apostille Convention for your situation, you may instead need a chain of authentication followed by embassy or consular legalization.
This distinction is especially important for documents being used in countries with requirements that differ from the standard Apostille process.
Puerto Rico Apostille & Authentication Services 🇵🇷
If you have a Puerto Rico birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, or other Puerto Rico-issued document that needs to be used internationally, we can also assist with Puerto Rico document authentication and Apostille services.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, but documents issued in Puerto Rico are handled through Puerto Rico's own government authorities rather than through the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.
Our service can be particularly helpful if you live outside Puerto Rico and need a Puerto Rico document prepared for use in another country.
You may be living in Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, California, another U.S. state, or overseas and need assistance obtaining and preparing a Puerto Rico document for international use.
We can help coordinate the appropriate document retrieval and authentication process and arrange return shipping when available.
United Arab Emirates (UAE) Authentication & Legalization Services 🇦🇪
Documents being used in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) may require a different authentication and legalization process than documents being sent to a Hague Apostille destination.
If you need to use a Massachusetts document in the UAE for employment, immigration, education, marriage, business, residency, or another official purpose, it is important to determine the correct legalization chain before beginning the process.
Depending on the document and current requirements, UAE document legalization may involve authentication at the appropriate U.S. or state level followed by additional UAE legalization steps.
Boston Notary Service can assist with UAE authentication and legalization services, helping clients understand the steps required for their particular documents.
Because requirements can vary by document type and intended use, we recommend contacting us before mailing original documents.
